Location:
Located near the Tropic of Cancer, Todos Santos is a small coastal town found on the Pacific coast side of the Baja California Peninsula, approximately an hour's drive north of Cabo San Lucas.
Overview:
Less touristy than other towns in the area, Todos Santos' unique atmosphere comes with cobblestone streets, art galleries, romantic restaurants, long beaches and amazing surf breaks.
History:
Started as a mission in 1724, it eventually became a major sugar-cane producer. The original mission, located across the street to the southwest of the small town plaza, is the home of the Virgin of Pilar statue, the focus of the main festival in the area.
Activities:
Historic Sights
Historic buildings including the church, theater, cultural center and museum plus many more are often open to the public. The optimal time to check them out is during the Historic Homes Tour.
Whale Watching
From January through March, eight species of whales abound in the area, especially the gray and humpback whales. Whales come down to the area to give birth. Any variety of tour packages is available to see the whales up close. Not interested in going out on a boat; these whales are often seen while walking along the shoreline.
Bird Watching
The area is a paradise for bird watchers. The list of birds making their home in the area is seemingly endless. Just to name a few: Western tanagers, northern mockingbirds, cactus wrens, Gila woodpeckers, turkey vultures, common nighthawks, doves, white-faced ibis, kestrels, herons, and egrets.
